Continuing the tradition of creating new and exclusive artistic expressions as part of Solid Sound, several Wilco band members will premiere creative endeavors for this year’s festival, taking place June 21-23 at MASS MoCA in North Adams, MA. The first, created by Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy, is a simulated sonic and visual experience of Wilco’s Chicago studio, The Loft. The installation will allow festival attendees a glimpse into the sights and sounds of the band’s personal recording and rehearsal space through visuals and never-before-heard audio samplings. The second, created by Wilco drummer Glenn Kotche, is called Earth Drums. A hands-on exhibit, Earth Drums will allow people to communicate through a collection of drums situated throughout the MASS MoCA campus. The third, dubbed Oscillator Fumes, is a series of collaborative synthesizer performances by Wilco keyboardist Mikael Jorgensen and longtime Wilco crewmembers Nathaniel Murphy, Travis Thatcher and Josh Goldsmith. Previous exhibits premiering at past Solid Sound Festivals have included Nels Cline’s Solid Sound Stompbox Station and Glenn Kotche’s InGlenntions.

Another Solid Sound tradition is the festival’s varied and extensive non-musical programming, which this year includes an urban birding walk; live birds of prey; post-concert guided star gazing with noted astronomer and famed solar eclipse-chaser Dr. Jay Pasachoff; an off-site naturalist hike; an axe restoration demonstration by Best Made; an environmental film series including a screening of the new documentary Musicwood; a “make-your-own musical instrument and jam session” for kids plus other kid-friendly crafts; discussions and demonstrations on home brewing, raising backyard chickens, making hot sauce, and more by Storey Publishing. THE SPIEL:

Solid Sound invites you to share your favorite camping memory (you know, your go-to story, the one all your friends bring up at parties — that one) and tell us why you’ll never forget that moment, adventure or experience. Do so and you’ll automatically be entered to win a deluxe camping prize courtesy of Mountain Hardwear and Solid Sound Festival. The winner (our favorite) will receive 1 camping spot (good for 4 people) at Solid Ground Campsite, a deluxe 4-person tent, 4 sleeping bags, 4 weather-proof jackets (which we’re sure you won’t need at our sunny festival), and 4 day packs all courtesy of Mountain Hardwear. In addition, we’ll give you a souvenir package of goodies, including 4 (count ‘em – four) three-day passes to Solid Sound Festival 2013. If you’re already a Solid Ground camper and you win, the tent will be set up when you arrive – so you can spend more time rocking, or to quote our hero Henry David Thoreau, you simply “Rise free from care before the dawn, and seek adventures.” Oh, and if you already have tickets to the festival and a campsite at Solid Ground, you’ll just have to drag four of your best friends along with you. Photos are not required, but are encouraged if it helps tell your story.

Purchase either dorm/hostel beds or tent plots by calling the MASS MoCA box office at (413) 662-2111 ext. 1, during regular business hours (11am – 5pm every day except Tuesday). Additional info can also be found on the MASS MoCA site here. 

Tent Camping at Buxton School:

This is a basic, open field tent site.  NO open Fires will be allowed, including Coleman-style cook stoves.  There will be porta-potties and potable water.   Breakfast will be available for purchase at the main school cafe for all campers.

Space is limited and advance reservations are required. There are no refunds.

Each tent plot reservation includes one 15′ x 18′ space, plus a parking space (on Buxton School’s campus) for one (non-RV) vehicle.  The site will not be set up for car-side camping, so please pack accordingly.    Plots will be assigned by the order in which your reservation is made. You will be sent reservation credentials which you must present at the check-in to the tent field.

Check in is Friday, June 21, from 11am-6pm.

Check out is by Sunday, June 23, before 1pm (your cars may remain packed and locked at campsite until 7pm).

A maximum of 4 persons per plot, enforced.

For safety reasons, only registered campers displaying Buxton Ground tent site wrist bands will be permitted into the grounds.

No open fires or fireworks.

No glass bottles.

No illegal substances.

Quiet please hours:  11pm – 9am.  This site has close neighbors, so quiet time is strictly enforced. (we want to come back next year!).

Breakfast will be available for purchase at the main Buxton school house.   The menu and hours of operation will be sent to campers in the “check in” information package, to be distributed approximately one month prior to the concert.

Please note, there will be limited on-site security, including 24 hour monitoring, but campers are strongly advised to not leave valuables in tents.  Leave valuables in your car, and lock up. The Buxton School and MASS MoCA will not be responsible for loss of valuables.

Camp Site Pricing:  (for 2 nights – Friday and Saturday nights):   $88 per tent plot.   One tent is permitted per plot.  4 people per tent max.

Dorm/Hostel Beds:

There are also a limited number of dorm rooms with hostel-style accommodations.   The beds (which are all Twin-sized mattresses) are located in shared double, triple and quadruple rooms.   We will assign shared rooms based on gender.   All beds are twin beds; 1 person per bed, Buxton dorm wrist bands will be required for entry.  All rooms share bathrooms.   Each room contains an in-room safe, but there are no locks on the doors.   These rooms are not handicapped accessible.

Bed linens may be provided for an additional fee of $5, if arranged in advance.   (Please pay in cash upon check-in).

Quiet please hours:  11pm – 9am.  Strictly enforced.

In short, the festival is a fun, fantastic collective experience for Wilco and its community of fans. 2013 will be the third iteration of the festival.
